Both the students and teachers are excited about next Wednesday the 8th of February. Here are 10 tips to help the conference we a success.
10 Tips for Parents Attending a Student Led Conference 1) Give positive and constructive feedback. The more encouraging you are, the more honest your child will be about their progress. 2) Ask questions. Use the prompts supplied, but also be willing to ask your own questions if you need clarification. 3) Arrive at the SLC with the intention of learning about your child’s progress. The SLC is not a ‘Show and Tell’. The more you participate, ask, observe and discuss, the more information you will learn about your child’s learning. 4) Before arriving, let your child know how pleased you are to attend. 5) Arrive on time. This will help your child to start calmly. 6) Give your child your full attention. Please turn off your mobile phone! 7) Keep an eye on the time but try not to rush through the different activities. If you are running out of time, suggest to you child, “Let’s talk more about this activity at home.” 8) If your child seems stuck or stressed simply smile, gently prompt and suggest your child re-reads the instructions or re-read it for them. 9) Read what you can expect to see at each station to better understand the purpose of the activity. 10) Enjoy this special, uninterrupted time with you child! We have had a fabulous start to the New Year in Grade 1 welcoming three new students; Julius, Taara and Sammy. It has been so fun to say hello to our old friends as well. In literacy, the students wrote a recount of their holiday, focusing on adding details, using interesting vocabulary, and using linking words in their writing. Additionally, each student has an individual writing goal that they are working towards. Keep an eye on Seesaw later this week to see your child reading their recount and talking about their writing goals. In mathematics, we have been focusing on repeated addition, leading into multiplication. Many of us have already been introduced to multiplication before and are therefore exploring arrays, equal groups and using manipulative to show mutliplication sentences. It is really important for studnets to understand what multiplication really means (equal groups), before they start to memorize any facts. We are continuing our inquiry into how patterns and cycles help us to understand the world around us this week and have been learning about the water cycle. Through books, videos and science experiments, we have been learning about the different stages of the cycle. We used this knowledge to draw and label a diagram of the water cycle. At some point this week, your child will be explaining their understanding of what makes a good diagram and the stages of the water cycle on Seesaw. Ollie, the Head Boarding House Mentor, is asking families to help our scholars in Grade 11 feel welcome into the UWCT community. Gr 1N students and I are excited to share something we have been exploring at school with you. Gr 1N and Gr 1J are trialling a new form of portfolio! This online portfolio has been created through the app Seesaw. Today, in your child’s home folder, you will find instructions on how to download the app and log into your child’s account. 1J parents, this information will be shared with you soon. The purpose of moving to this platform is to enable you to see and comment on your child’s learning in a timely manner, to further engage students in developing a record of their learning journey and to hopefully spark more conversations about learning at home. Please note that you can only access your child’s online portfolio and can only do so with the QR code I’ve provided in your child’s folder today. For more information about Seesaw please watch this Slide show explaining Seesaw. As said above, this is a trial and we would really appreciate your feedback and honest opinion of this new form of portfolio. Please feel free to e-mail or catch us at school with any feedback. Kind Regards, Nikki A reminder that last week was our last trip to the jungle for 2016. Tomorrow we have a Primary School assembly at 9:10 in the MAP room and parents are welcome to join us and see the exciting learning taking place at UWCT.
Audition Information, Show Commitments, and Tentative Schedule Auditions This year, we will have our Primary School Musical! Our auditions for the musical play, Aladdin will take place in 5 minute time slots where students may audition individually, with one other person, or with up to two other people. Students who are interested to join the audition should prepare any song that they are confident to sing. They should also prepare any short dance routine and has to be ready to read a short dialogue that will be given by the panel of teachers on the day of the auditions. We want to see the best of each student and want to reduce nerves as much as possible, which sometimes means having others there for support can be helpful. Groups larger than 3 make it too difficult to fairly discern between the performances of the individuals. We like to have fun, but we also put a lot of serious work into each show to make as excellent a performance as possible. Only those students who have auditioned and have been chosen for the musical will be rehearsing in this CCA. Rehearsals are mandatory for all scheduled cast members every Monday and Thursday from 2:40pm until 4:00pm, including Saturday rehearsals and Tech Week rehearsals. Roles will be assigned by the show committee to find the balance between where students will best be able to grow as a performer and the needs of the show. Students who are cast, in whatever role, should know they are considered a valued member of the team and we enthusiastically look forward to working with the whole ensemble to make the best show possible. Schedule: CAST LIST POSTING – TBC – Final cast list will be posted in the Primary School Music Room notice board. Thank you for taking the time this week to meet with myself and your child to discuss their goals that they are working toward in class. Your positive support is a critical part of their learning journey. Some helpful hints to use at home as follow up.
Students will be supervised by their Homeroom Teacher (HRT) and TA until 1530. At 1530, we ask parents to please collect their child from their classroom and sign them out from the HRT or TA. Then, together parents can walk across to Thanyapura to the Christmas Fair. If parents choose not to attend the Christmas Fair, they are to collect their child from their child's classroom at 1430. The performances will begin at 1600 and Grade 1 will perform at 1700. Students who are not collected by a parent/guardian by 1540 will be escorted to the Tree Club. Students should be dressed in jeans and any colourful top. If there are any changes to this procedure, parents are asked to communicate this with their child's Homeroom teacher in advance.
