Chinese New Year
We were so lucky to have our mums with Chinese heritage to come in and share their traditions and rituals surrounding Chinese New Year. We read stories, made dumplings, watched videos and wrote imaginative stories about our dragon puppets. After school we went to an assembly where the dragon dancers payed us a visit!
Traditions from Cultures around the World
To get started on our new central idea of "Different cultures use rituals and traditions to express beliefs" for the "How we express ourselves" unit of inquiry, we have had some special visitors come to our classroom. To describe how their cultures express themselves, both Diogo and Rutendo came in to describe various rituals and traditions from their home countries, Portugal and Zimbabwe, respectively. We learned all about different holidays and celebrations the beliefs that are expressed during these times. We had many questions for the scholars including, "How does your culture celebrate weddings?", "What happens when you lose a tooth in your culture?" "How do you dance in your culture?" and "What kind of legends are in your culture?"
