UOI 5 - Sharing The Planet
An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.
See, Think, Wonder Thinking Routine
The "See, think, wonder" thinking routine was developed by educators at Harvard University as a way for students to think deeply about concepts they are learning about. To tune into our new unit on Sharing the Planet, students were given provocative pictures surrounding the theme. They then wrote down what they see (the literal), what they think about it (their opinion) and what it makes them wonder (the inquiring). What the students came up with was enough to leave you with goosebumps. These children are obviously very passionate about caring for our planet already.
3, 2, 1 Thinking Routine
Another thinking routine developed out of Harvard was the 3, 2, 1 routine. Students were asked to write down 3 choices they already make to support the sustainability of the Earth's resources, 2 things they wonder and 1 thing they would like to see changed in the world.
Sorting Renewable and non-renewable resources
Drawing from various non-fiction books and videos and guest speakers, the students brainstormed different resources and then considered whether they are renewable or non-renewable.
Guest Speakers- Jason Robertson and Grade 11, Dasha
Ashley's father, Jason, visited us to talk about the different choices people make to support the sustainability of the planet. One of the things we talked about was the major problem of plastic on the island of Phuket. We looked at how our individual choices to reduce the amount of plastic we use can help to spread this idea to others around us like friends and family.
One of the Grade 11 students, Dasha from Plastic Free Phuket Group, also came to visit. She presented some eye-opening facts about plastic waste and pollution on the island and around the world. This left the students feeling very passionate and ready to take action!

Reusable Cloth Bags
The Grade 1's decided that it was very clear that we had to take action and reduce the amount of plastic we use in Phuket to keep the waste out of our oceans and out of our food chain. The students wanted to spread the word, so they wrote chalk messages about their opinions on the side walks of the school reading, "Say no to plastic bags!" "Reduce your waste!". From there, they got the idea that this wasn't enough and that they wanted to do something significant and meaningful to reduce plastic usage. The boys and girls asked Kru Jessica to draft an email to the parents asking for donations of recycled cloth. Their idea is to make resuable cloth shopping bags. The Boomerang Bag Project was born! This is an ongoing project that will likely last until the end of the year. If you would like to get involved with the sewing of these bags, please contact Kru Jessica or Kru Ore.
